Abbreviations and Play Descriptions for the Notre Dame Football Predictor
Abbreviations:
Hopefully, most of the abbreviations are obvious, but if not, here is a complete list.
- FB run = Fullback run.
- FB pass = Fullback pass reception.
- TB run = Tailback run.
- TB swing = Tailback pass reception in the flat with not blockers in front, i.e. this is not a screen pass.
- TB pass = Tailback pass reception down field.
- TE pass = Tight end pass reception.
- SE pass = Split end or wide receiver pass reception.
- QB sneak = Quarterback sneak.
Play descriptions:
Most plays clearly fall within the obvious meaning of most of the
plays graphed on the screen. A few exceptions and rules of thumb
are the following:
- "QB sneak" includes all runs by the quarterback (except
on the option) and even includes instances when the the quarter
back is sacked. Thus, you will see if you set the inputs to
the end of a game with Notre Dame behind with little time left
in the game, SE passes have a high probability, but the QB sneaks
are surprisingly high. This is because of the high rate
of sacks and scrambles by the quarterback in that situation.
- FB run and TB run: sometimes the fullback lines up as
as tailback. If he runs the ball in that situation, it is
considered a TB run. If the fullback is the lone running
back, he is considered a fullback if he is in a three-point
stance and a tailback if not.
- Split end screens: if the quarterback throws a quick pass
to a wide receiver in the flat, and the only blocker(s) for
the receiver are other receivers, it is considered a SE pass.
If he has linemen blocking for him, it is considered a screen.
