Due: March 5, 2003

Unless otherwise indicated, all problems are from the course text.

  1. Final Value Theorem Problems:
    1. Use the final value theorem to find the steady state value of the response of the transfer function
      Y1(s) = 1/(s+2)
      to a unit step input.
    2. Try to apply the final value theorem to find the steady state value of the response of the transfer function
      Y2(s)= 1/(s-2)
      to a unit step input.
    3. Use the matlab
      step()
command to plot the response of Y2(s) to a step input. If the steady state values are different, explain why.
  2. 6.8.1:1
  3. 6.8.1:2
  4. 6.8.2:2
  5. 6.8.3:1
  6. 6.8.4:1
  7. Match each of the pole zero plots with the corresponding step response in the following plots. For each match, write one or two sentences explaining your choice. Number the pole/zero plots 1 to 6, left to right and top to bottom, so that the lower left figure is 4. Label the step response plots a through f, left to right and top to bottom, so that the lower left figure is d. (Postscript versions of the figures are available here and here.
  8. Bonus (True or False for each): Prof. Goodwine has seen which of the following bands live and in concert?
    1. Rush
    2. The Rolling Stones
    3. The Who
    4. Led Zeppelin
    5. The Grateful Dead
    6. The Red Hot Chili Peppers
    7. No Doubt
    8. Bim Ska la Bim
    9. The South Bend Symphony Orchestra
