Homework 9

Spring, 2003
Issued: March 28, 2003
Due: April 2, 2003
  1. Using the data in this file, identify the second order transfer function (two poles and no zeros (like section 8.3.2 in the course text)) which generated it.
  2. Plot the root locus of G(s) = (s+4)/(s(s+2)) (using Matlab is fine). Pick any point on the root locus and use the magnitude criterion to determine (by hand) the corresponding k value (this material is from chapter 5).
  3. Optional (no credit): In class on Wednesday, the number 3 billion was discussed. In order to have an intuitive feel for the size of that number, determine who the president of the United States was 3 billion seconds ago.

"Judge not, that ye be not judged"... is an abdication of moral responsibility: it is a moral blank check one gives to others in exchange for a moral blank check one expects for oneself. There is no escape from the fact that men have to make choices; so long as men have to make choices, there is no escape from moral values; so long as moral values are at stake, no moral neutrality is possible. To abstain from condemning a torturer, is to become an accesory to the torture and murder of his victims. The moral principle to adopt... is: "Judge, and be prepared to be judged."
