You can patent a design according to USC 171. For a new, original and ornamental design for an article of mnufacture.

German Geschmackmuster-"design pattern" in germany. court rules that even though all of the requirements are not present for a patent as they are in the US, this qualifies as being patented in a foreign country as they are given exclusive rights to create the design for a time period.
